The Hawkes Family have been farming vegetables for 6 generations, in various locations around Victoria. They have lived on the Boneo property since 1974, where Pam and Barry Hawkes raised their four children. Barry, his son Richard, and daughter Andrea now run the farm on a day-to-day basis, with an ever growing team of farm hands, shop and office staff. Their grandchildren, Lenny, Harvey, Rupert and Matilda like to help out too!
Over the years, the farm has specialised in a number of vegetables, including carrots. In 2007, Richard, an agronomist by trade, started growing a small area of potatoes at the Boneo farm, and now their potatoes, including Hawkes premium kipflers, are available at many gourmet restaurants on the Peninsula and in Melbourne, as well as available to you at the Farm Store. The store has evolved from a few bags of spuds in a shed with an honesty box, to a staffed shop selling Hawkes Potatoes alongside a great variety of other fresh local veggies. The aim of the store is to bring together great produce from around the Peninsula. A lot of our suppliers grow some of the best produce in Australia, but do not sell direct to the retail market. Our shop is a showcase of the magnificent work that the Peninsula growing community has to offer.
Aside from the Farm Store, the Hawkes family grows vegetables for sale to the wholesale market, and operate a packing business which brings in vegetables from around Australia to be washed, packed, and returned to the market for sale. You never know – that potato served at your favourite restaurant just might be a Hawkes spud!
You can also find us at Boneo Market on the third Saturday of each month at Boneo Primary School.
